Post – SGH Field Work Lecture

After school on Wednesday, October 12th, students who went on the SGH fieldwork trip to the Philippines attended a post-field work lecture. Mr.Ishii from CFF, the trip’s local coordinator, came to the lecture and told the students his thoughts about the fieldwork.

The students were divided into small groups. In each group, students shared their memories, experiences, and thoughts about the eight-day trip. They told their unique stories to each other and it seemed that they were very excited to have an opportunity to talk about September’s trip.

Next, students shared their findings about their research topics. For this, they categorized what they learned into three categories: “Things that left the biggest impression”, “New discoveries” and “How they are feeling and thinking after the fieldwork experience.” Students jotted down their thoughts onto different colored sticky notes and organized them into the appropriate categories.

The notes were mapped out on big sheets of paper where they could organize and merge their ideas. Then, students reviewed the organized ideas to identify what they really want to share with the others. Finally, students gave a three- minute speech about their main findings from the fieldwork.

During the speech, students looked for the right words to clearly express their thoughts. Groupmates gave feedback about the speeches.

The students who went on the fieldwork trip will have more opportunities, both in school and outside, to give presentations on their findings. Today’s lecture was a good opportunity for them to prepare for such opportunities.

Here are some comments from the students who attended the lecture:

“It was difficult to organize my ideas and coherently deliver them.”

“From my friends’ speeches, I learned new things and angles about different issues.”

“I hope that I can gain the interest of people who who haven’t been to the country yet.”

“I hope that people can learn something new about the Philippines and think about the country from my speech.”

Students realized that it is important for them to apply the lessons they have learned through the fieldwork in the future.
