Global Symposium and Kyorin University Visit
2014/09/06
Junten attended the 4th Global Symposium held at Kyorin University on September 6 and introduced what Junten SGH program is and what we have done so far. Kyorin University has excellent medicine and foreign studies programs. They have proactively applied for a variety of government supported projects, and they have great record of being selected for the projects. Global Symposium was held as a part of the “Global Citizen Development Project” and Kyorin was chosen one of 42 universities out of 129 schools. On August 21, Kyorin was also selected for the “Acceleration Program for University Education Rebuilding : AP”. Kyorin aims to be more open to the world, which is also what Junten is trying to achieve through SGH, so there are definitely areas where Kyorin and Junten can work together.
Junten gave a presentation on the international education efforts at Junten Junior & Senior High schools, and Shotoku Gakuen Junior & Senior High School also gave a presentation on their international education efforts. Kyorin University introduced their PLB class.
After the presentations, there was a panel discussion regarding future global education. The panelists discussed about Kyorin’s “High School and University Collaboration” plan which is part of the “Acceleration Program for University Education Rebuilding : AP” and how we can collaborate in the areas of language education and Advanced Placement (credited courses for high school students). The audience asked questions, shared their thoughts and opinions, so we had very active discussions.
Some of S-Class students (1st and 2nd year) came to the symposium, and after the symposium, they visited Kyorin’s school of medicine research laboratory. Students visited Dr.Takako Osaki’s office. Dr.Osaki is an assistant-professor of infectious disease medicine (microbiology) at Kyorin Graduate School of Medicine. Students didn’t have enough time after the symposium, but they were able to see what cultivated bacterial colony and prepared microscope slides which Dr.Osaki had prepared in advance to show the Junten students.
For the students who want to study medicine, visiting a real research room, the environment in which students is dreaming of working in the future, was great experience. Here are some of the comments from the students: “I was able to see real research tools, machines, bacteria and I learned a lot” and “I thought I would like to study in the environment like this, so I had a great time”.
