Global Week 2018 Digest 【Day 1 】October 31st, 2018

From October 31st to November 7th (10/31, 11/1, 2, 6 and 7) in 2018, Junten Senior High School hosted Global Week. Global Week is a unique and innovative event developed by the Junten SGH program. During Global Week, regular classes finished at 2:00 pm. This year’s Global Week a collaboration even with Ikubunkan Yume Gakuen so students from Junten and Ikubunkan attended workshops and lectures provided by university students, graduate school students, university professors, researchers, and corporate executives. Global Week was designed to provide students with interactive learning opportunities that are inventive and borderless.

“Using English on Smart Phones”

1.Class Content 
Today handheld devices and applications have become useful tools for language education, especially in communication, the technology has played significantly important role. In this class, students used smart phones to learn English, using applications to communicate each other. 

(Descriptions)

– Communicate with classmates without using smart phones. Do quizzes using smart phones. 

-Class was divided into small groups, students discussed about Top 10 popular songs, and take a survey about the Top 10 songs. 
– The result of the survey will be displayed on the white board in the classroom and students communicate about the music using communication application on smart phones. 

2.Student Feedbacks
・I thought that class will be taught using papers and pens, so I was surprised that we used only online tools. Actually, it was easeir for us to communicate that way so I was able to openly talk with the students from different schools. It was easier to participate in the class. It was very fun. 
・We didn’t use Japanese but used only English. It was not only a one-way communication but we were able to expand our learning through active communication.  I learned that it is OK not to speak English perfectly but we need to communicate better.

「 In a global world, is technology killing our culture?」

1. Class Content 
In a global world is technology killing our culture?
・”What is technology?”, “What is Culture”? ; Looking back human history and the changes the societies have made,  the students in the class thought about what the future may be. 
・Culture has diverse elements in it, so it is hard to determine what a culture is by looking at  lifestyle, customs, history, regions and so forth. Culture is like an iceberg of which the majority of it is hidden and you can see the whole picture. 

・Development of new technologies, such as smart phones or other tools, is necessary a good advancement. What do you think how these development and changes may influence our future? 

2.Student Feedback
・It is hard to grasp a culture, as it is making ongoing changes. I understand that you can not see one culture by understanding the tip of it, just like an iceberg. 

・Culture is changing but as the technology develops, culture can be changed as we see in the birth of new form of art or music. 
・I learned that we can forecast our technology advancement 100 years ahead, just like the people in the past predicted the future 100 years ahead.

・I understand that how closely our lives and technology are related.

『The country is recovering from civil war, but the public services and education are very behind. There are aids from different countries, but there is a lack of communication between organizations in the country.』
2.Make Sure to Check after the Development
① Project to Provide Education for the Children in Poverty (HMB1)
② Project to help agriculture, food, nutrition, health and home economy in agriculture villages
3.Policy Advocacy
『Providing aids is very important but it is more important that the aids functions effectively in Cambodia. Policy advocacy is important to ensure that the aids are in place and they are effectively used.』

2.Student Feedbacks
● I learned that it is important to understand that local circumstances when providing international cooperation. I thought it is good to check the 5 element evaluation; feasibility, effectuality, effectivity, impact and sustainability. Even if foreign aids are available, the government is not making any changes, then it is difficult to change the situation, so I learned how important it is to built a good government. I would like to think more about international cooperation.

・SDGsis not an issue of one country but it is a global issue. 
・During the icebreaker, I realized how hard it is to inform my birthday using only body language.
・It was interesting to work with students from a different school. I realized how much I do not know about things!
・It was good to know about Meiji Gakuen University. It was a little challenging as I had to express my opinions.

【What Is My Mission?】

The students in this class thought about their mission. What is the mission that makes your life unique and different fro others. There will be more and more turning points to come in our lives, but all the experience will lead to the better future. We tend to think that foreign people and we are different but the sense of happiness is universal. We learned that how important the power of smiles and taking actions. What you need to make friends in a foreign country is to respect the difference. We need to study the history, culture and religion of that country. 

2.Student Feedback

Chasing your dreams and fulfilling it is what you can do at any age, and you have to think about your mission and what you always want to do, even if you get to work.

I did not know at all what I wanted to do in my future, but today I learned that I should do my best with what I wanted to do now matter what that is. I also wanted to become a bridge between Japan and the world like Mr. Matsumoto.

We should do what we would like to do anytime if you want to. Otherwise, you will regret it. It is important to look back at the event that greatly influenced your lives.. Be active. What I really need when I go abroad was to improve my language skills but willingness to act is important. By making a lot of effort enables us to achieve our goal.

 ”New Space Observation using Gravity Wave”

1. Class Content 
Humankind has found the gravity wave on September 14th, 2015. Since then, a new space observation method using gravity wave has been used and the observations have found massive stellar blackholes, the finding of coalescence of binary neutron stars and gamma-ray burst.  At the end of next year, KAGRA will join the space observation and it is expected to find new phenomenon and solve unanswered questions about space.

・As an example of gravity in general relativity, class saw a vide of trampoline.

2.Student Feedback 
・I learned the physics studies that constantly tries to find new ideas. 
・I learned that gravity waves are used when lights can’t find be used for observation projects. 
・I learned about gravity waves. It is good to know more about space observations and ongoing observations using gravity waves.

1. Class Content
Solar, windy and geothermal powers are all renewable energy. These are necessary when we think of sustainability and they are the areas expected to grow in terms of community and industry development. Ms.Kurihara has worked to implement renewable energy at Japanese and Germany companies and explained what kind of personnel is needed and required to work in the renewable energy sector. 

2. Student Feedback
I learned why the teacher started involved in the renewable energy area and I also learned what is the Japan’s energy self-sufficiency and what the issues are. It is interesting to learn that local communities are working to explore renewable energy to restore the economical strength of the areas.

 “Animal Welfare : Bringing Satisfying Living for Humans and Animals”

1. Class Content 
Eggs or meat, any animal products we eat every day is “things we eat”, but what about cows, are pigs and chickens that are used to produce such food “materials”? They are not “materials” and they are “being” with lives. We raise “life” and kill them. Then we sell them as “products”. In the 20th century, we focused on improvement of productivity and effectiveness therefore livestocks were treated as just “materials”. In the 21st century, western societies started seeing livestock as “life” and shifting to the production paying attention to the welfare of animals. In some western countries, caged confinement to raise livestock are phasing away. 
However, the awareness of farm animal welfare in Japan is still lacking and there is no meaningful measures or plans have been implemented. In this class, students learned the history of farm animal welfare, what Japan is doing in terms of it. At the end of the class, Dr.Matsuki addressed that how Japan deals with farm animal welfare is in the hand of consumers, like us, and our lifestyle and values.

〈Object〉
Understanding sleep mechanism and biological clock, learn how to resolve health issues. 
〈Description〉
Three important elements for sleep is “length, quality and rhythm”. “Length” : it changes depending on the age. For junior high school student age, 9 hours is enough. For high school student age, 8.5 hours is enough.  “Quality” : Young people usually sleep deeply. “Rhythm” : Lighting has a big influence to this.   Biological clock and lighting are closely related. Around 20 years old, our body starts shifting to a night type. Average high school students go to sleep at midnight and get at 9:00 am. Recently the countries except Japan, tend to change the school staring times to a later time to improve the quality of sleep. As a result of the change, their academic performances and attendances have been improved. Good sleep gives students health and enhances their mood. 
3.Student Feedback 
While we sleep, our brains are still working. Good sleep improves our memory and calculation speeds. I learned that the “Golden Time” is not true. I learned a lot of new ideas and it was very interesting. I would like to learn more about sleep.

Our future needs more cultural stimulation, in particular, in the tourism, food and entertainment areas. What kind of occupations are needed in the future? The use of digital information, AI or Big Data will grow and how do you work and survive in the future? Cars will be automatic and do not take human drivers anymore. It is important to connect with as many people as you can to work in the future.

1. Class Content 
Dr.Shibata addressed Environmental Offset in the class. Humans received various “services” from environment and we can’t live without the services so preservation of environment is very important. Development is also important for our lives. Here is the dilemma “environment” or “development”. One way to address is “environmental offset”.  When developing one area, think of things that environment loses. Such environment can be moved to somewhere else or place alternatives. In the thinking of “environmental offset”, lives of local creatures may be lost but is there any ethical issues doing so?  

2.Student Feedback
“Environmental Services” is a new idea for me. We receive water, food, clothes, buildings, beautiful sceneries, which are all come from environment. The lost environment can be restored or moved to somewhere else to keep the balance- this concept was interesting, however if there is no available land to restore or move the lost environment, this idea does not work.
