Junten Senior High School 2nd Year : Study Abroad Program in Canada (2)

In the English lesson in the morning, the students were divided in three classes. There were posters in the classrooms.
SMUS is a private high school that has about 800 students. They have a large school yard where Junten students enjoyed playing soccer, bu this is only a small part of the yard. The can fit a number of soccer field in the yard. The structure you can see in the far in the photo is the class room facility.
On the 2nd day (July 26th), there was a presentaion lesson in the afternoon. Junten students showed a presentation about Japan that they had worked on before leaving Japan. The instructor told the student, “Do not look at the script and try speaking without looking down”, this made the students nervous. After each presentation, audience asked questions and the instructors gave a feedback.

The students had an English lesson in the morning and then they had a global activity in the afternoon. The group visited three universities and experienced different activities that are unique to the universities.
On Friday July 27th, students visited University of Victoria. They was a building dedicated to the indigenous cultures. Any universities in Canada have a similar building that pay respect and recognizes the indigenous cultures.
At University of Victoria, Nobel Prize winner, Economist, Environmentalist and Futurologist Dr.Guy Dauncy gave a educational tour for the Junten students.
In the class, the students were asked their futures then to vote for the closest term to theirs. “Uncertainty” or “Worry” received the most votes. Dr.Dauncy told in his 40 minute class about his ideas of the future. Then students voted again. Now, students voted in the term “Hope”. “It’s been almost 10 years, since the world has paid attention the environment crisis but the information we see almost always focus on “fear”. I am hoping young people to take actions with “hope” in their minds. So my work is to expand positivities”. At the end of the lecture, students took a group photo with Dr.Dauncy.
The Junten students spent time with their host-families. On Monday, the group visited Camosun College in the afternoon. Between Camosun in Lansdowne and SMUS is a walking distance.
After the university visit, the students took one of the university class, “Hospitality”. The house built in 1920 was donated to the university and now the house is used as a restaurant. The restaurants are open to public for 10 times a year and people come to enjoy the food. Students took a drink-making lesson.
Then they took a cooking lesson, in which they learned how to make tortilla.
On Tuesday afternoon, the students visited Royal Roads University. There is a castle with an Italian style garden in the school campus. There is also an Italian style garden. During a tour, the students were given a gesture clue and they were tasked to guess what the word was. The group in the photo was assigned to guess the word “crown”.
The weather has been very nice everyday. It has been hot, but not as hot as Japan. The mornings and evenings usually cool off. According to the weather forecast, tomorrow will be cooler.
