The Phillippine Fieldwork SGH First Half of the Year Report
On Thursday November 9th, Junten SGH gave a presentation on the SGH First Half of the Year of 2017. The 1st and 2nd Year Senior High School students shared what they have done and learned during the 1st half year.
Ms.Okada, 1st Year students shared her research “Hunger Free Workshop”. The entire 1st Year are in the SGH program, so each 1st class had a different SGH activities. Through the activities, each student thought how they can contribute, participate to help the society and the world. Ms.Okada is interested in the food issues around the world so she worked as a facilitator of the workshop and asked the rest of the students to think of the food issues and hunger in the world.
Then the 1st Year students gave a presentation on their experience in the Philippines. Three students gave a very nice report. From poverty, hygiene issues, slams and so on, they actually saw the reality and experienced the differences in culture and values. They noticed the dilemma of what they thought “right” is not necessary “right” for the local people.
Mr.Egawa, 1st Year Senior High School said that he thought about “happiness” more and realized that there are differences in “happiness”. People in the Philippines told Mr.Egawa, “don’t cry over things you have lost, but you value things that are truly matter to you.” This really touched Mr.Egawa’s heart and the audience was also inspired his presentation.
The 2nd Year students shared their experience on the field trip and also their activity “Hand Washing Promotion”. Junten SGH has continuously provided hygiene education through songs to the local children. This year, they added a drama to deliver the importance of hand-washing.
The students used their mentors’ ideas, but also added new elements to make it better. At the end of the presentation they addressed that it is important to spread the hand-washing habit, but it is also important to raise their Junten predecessors who can take over and improve the project.
Finally, MsToriguchi, 1st Year students gave a report on her experienced on “Tobatate Japan”. Ms.Toriguchi took the study abroad program to learn “cultural differences and different values in different countries”. During the trip, she realized that how wrong she had been. She realized that the differences are not only stemming from race or nationality, but also stemming from individual differences. So it is very important to respect “individual” and getting a lot of cultural shocks will improve one’s understanding of different culture and values.
We prone to think that the cultural differences attribute to the nationalities. But there are different thinkings just in Japan, thus the conclusion Ms.Toriguchi’s drew certainly will lead to better understanding of different cultures.
The Junten SGJ program has run while students have multiple tasks at school. Despite the busy schedules, the students keep working and researching on their SGH research topics. This shows their commitments to learn and improve their knowledge. This is the core value of SGH.
