Kyorin University  Writing Center, Special Lecturer Jason Somerville先生
【Student interaction in English using smartphone apps 】Attended Students : 16

Mr.Somerville introduced students the iOS English activity applications, so the students brought their smarphones to try them out. The theme of the lecture was “Theme Park“, and Mr.Somerville incorporated ICT in to his lectures to show how ICT can be used in classrooms. The theme was a familiar topic for the students so students engaged with the class activities really well. Especially LINE (students ask questions each other and respond to them), Voice Recorder(recorded a conversation, and listen to it and correct their mistakes then practice again) , Kahoot!(students can participate in quizzes. Questions of the quizzes are displayed on the screen and participants can answer to them on their iphones.)These are very convenient and active learning experience that can be used in the current classes.

◆ Kanda University of International Studies Dean Dr. Kuniya Sakai
【Time of Globalization and Time of Young People 】 Attended Students: 24

Global means the earth in the whole. The fall of Berlin Wall changed Germany. The ages between 14 and 26 are called “Productive Population” and not the population aged between 0 to 13 and the population over 66 years are growing bigger, this means the rest of the society needs to support them. The Global Personnel means to understand your own country well, then be able to collaborate with the society that has multiple cultures and languages. English is not the language for English native speakers but also important as a common language in Asia or Africa. The world is working well because non-English-native speakers are having great discussions.
Student’s Comment:I think I didn’t really understand what globalizaion means, although the term is used everywhere. Today Iearned that globalization is necessary in order to support Japan so we study English.  Firstly I think it is important for me to understand my own culture then other cultures. I will study English hard but also Japanese too.

◆ Hosei University Department of Clinical Plant Science  Dr. Yasuo Watanabe
【Think About the World Food Issues 】Attended Students : 24
Several issues concerning food in the world were introduced. Global issues such as environment, population growth. food security, macro-economy policies, the expansion of bioethanol production, politics are closely related with the politics, economy and society. It is said that 800 million people live in starvation in the world, however every year 1.3 billion tons of food is being wasted. The world food problem is not happening because of the food shortage but because of food distribution issues. To solve this, EU has continued working on the issue, but different countries have different policies and strategies so how to compromise and adjust the differences is another challenge. Japan’s food self-sufficiency rate is very low so our food is closely connected with the rest of the world. Thinking about Japan’s food problems and challenges is to think about the food issues in the rest of the world.
Student’s Comment:I knew that food issues caused by the lacking of access to food, while we have a plenty of food.  Today I saw a picture of the food of a Japanese’ family and a refuge camp, and I was very shocked. I am researching about Education in the world as my SGH research project. Education can help solve food issues, because education can raise awareness and raise people who can resolve the problems.

Tokyo University Department of Physics Dr. Junji Yumoto
【Waves are the Basis of Everything The World of Trigonometric Function  Attended Students : 24

A lot of things come to us in waves, one of which is sound. Dr.Yumoto used Excel to show how trigonometric function and sound are related. In class, students draw trigonometric function graph and confirmed that trigonometric function is actually waves. Students used Excel to draw square waves, sawtooth waves and triangle waves. By adding sine waves, graphs will become angulated. The angulated graphs can be expressed by using SIN COS. In the future, students may be interested in Fourier Series Expansion, this workshop was the first step closer to incorporate math into the their future work.

◆ Gakushuin Women’s College, International Communication Dr.Mikitaro Shobayashi/Dr.Keiko Arai / Dr.Toshio Shimizu  【The Olympics and Its Legacy  】Attended Students : 23

● The lecture addressed various issues surrounding the Olympics. First was the issues with the modern olympics and Muslim women in sports. ● The Olympics and Arts: …Since the Stockholm Olympics 1912 to the London Games in 1948. Art was added as one of the Olympic competitions but later it was changed to the Cultural Competition. ● The food used for the Olympics games. The food served at the Olympics games come form sustainable food sources.

The lecture enables students see the Olympics in different and wide viewpoints. This gave students to research further on the issues of the Olympics. This lecture was really the liberal arts study and this academic discipline is very important to globalization.
Student Comment:● It is interesting to know about the art competition. Art will stay forever, so seeing the art products we can trace back the history, that is interesting. I also learned a new thing. The Olympics has set food restrictions too. Food in Japan is safe, so foreign visitors can eat them without worrying about the safety. ● I learned to see one thing from different viewpoints. By seeing things from a different view, I would be able to find what I am interested in studying in.

◆ JICA Research Institute  Research Assistance Mr.Hiromi Sato
【International Cooperation of Japan – Historical and Future Development  】Attended Students :18

In the lecture, students learned about the projects Mr.Sato has worked on at JICA Research Institute. Ms.Sato talked about the trends in development projects in the world and how Japan’s contributions. The students were divided into two local resident groups and two JICA groups. They did a role play to discuss issues and identify the problems. Each group presented their ideas in the class. In the end, JICA’s ideas had more support,  1group VS 3groups.
Student Comment:The key is that if the support has pay consideration to how the receivers of the support feel. International cooperation has pros and cons. Supporting someone or a country is not the answer and a problem may arise through the effort. Support is not just about money but also needs to pay attention to its unique history. Support should really be planned and considered the local culture and history to see the real issues. I think communicating with local people is very important.

◆Talkative Travel Education Vice President     Max Fielder先生 Mr.Takaaki Fukuda, Junten Faculty Member
【 An amazing English experience your summer in English】 Attended Students : 22

Talkative Travel Education arranges study abroad programs to study English in England. The study programs are located in London and Oxford. Japanese high school students will be able to study English with other students from around the world. In this way students can be exposed to many various kinds of English through this experience. Besides studying English students will have the chance to go sightseeing, play sports, and visit the theatres in the West End of London. I think one of the highlights of the program is staying at the dormitory of Oxford University during a part of their stay on the program. Talkative Travel Education offers an opportunity for students to improve their English, make friends from other cultures and to have an incredible time in England.
Student Comment :I think the lecture went really well and I really enjoyed by participating. I was quite nervous but everybody was listening properly and it really became a great lecture. When we had the mini games, everybody looked happy and it was really fun. If there will be another chance to have a lecture, I really would like to do it again. I think the idea of being able to learn English abroad in England while sightseeing in London and Oxford is very appealing to us high school students.

◆  JASTJ (Japanese Association of Science & Technology Journalists) Chair Person Mr.Iichiro Yamamoto 【What Science Means to Humankind 】Attended Students :28

Science technology is applied technology that basing on the basic science research. It is actually a made-up word in Japan. The field of Science developed because of the military benefit but it is also used for humans.  The recent progress in science is breathtaking.  Electric calculator, personal computer and so on. The prices of these tech projects have come down and they can be mass-produced. Smart Phones and AI are the results of advanced science. Humankind uses brains and tools and that is how we have prospered. In return, we learned how to slow down and our physicality has degenerated. Where humankind is directing to for the future?
Student Comment:Science technology, as it advances, creates problems – today I learned we need to face and keep this in mind. I learned the history of computers. Before I didn’t understand IoT or ICT but today I learned what they mean. As AI advances, by 2045, human’s mind will be AI. Science technology needs humans and it makes our lives very convenient. But I realized that our job may be taken by AI and it is not all good for us.

◆Tokyo Denki University School of Engineering Mechanical Engineering Dr.Hiroyuki Saito
Mechanical Engineering and Dream Materials】Attended Students :22

Dr.Saito showed a pulley, which students learned how it works and used in class to explain most of the machines created in the world is basing on this pulley engineering. He goes on to explain that advanced machines are not something so different, thus any of the students can come up with new ideas and develop new machines.  Dr.Saito showed coins, buddhist statutes, smart phones and airplane bodies and explained these are made of metals or FRP. Dr.Saito closed the lecture by saying, all the development he introduced in the lecture is made by people who were influenced by cartoons or stories.
Student Comment:I understand that a small miscalculation of a machine can lead to a huge disaster. Before taking this lecture, I wasn’t sure if this will lead to my academic interests, but now I am very much interested in learning about about science.
