SGH 3rd Philippines Fieldwork 2017 (3)

On October 1st, students moved to Manila. They had a handmade sandwich breakfast at the beach in Pangasinan.

In the afternoon, students visited the site where Smokey Mountain used to be. This area was a garbage dump before but now there is a mountain of soil that is as high as 30 meter. The local security group guided Junten Students and walked up the mountain. There were people who are living there, and their houses are made of available items that they can use to build a shelter. They grow potatoes and bananas. From their site, you can see modern high rise buildings. “The ocean there is connected us to Japan”, Mr.Ishii from CFF explained and this reminded of the Junten group that how our life in Japan connected with the people here.

At night, the students went to “UNIQUEASE” and they had dinner there. The representative of UNIQUEASE, Ms.Yachiyo Nakamura, told the group that UNIQUEASE was created to provide work opportunities for young people in adolescence who lived on streets or at a risk of using for sexual labour. Junten students asked the young people and children at the slum, “What is your dream?” and they responded, “
they respond, “To survive to my adulthood”. The words hit all of us very hard.

On the final day, the group had a time to review their trip. During the trip, all of them learned so much. Students discovered issues that they didn’t know before and brought back a lot of homework.

The field-trip report presentation is scheduled to be held in November.
