Junten Won the 12th Ranking of the NFLJ Debate: Gateway to the NSJA’s US National Tournament 2018

On August 6th, four students from Junten Senior High School participated the National Forensic League of Japan (NFLJ) National Debate Contest 3 held at Yamanashi Gakuin University. Four students were divided in two groups, Team A and B.  Team B made the ranking of 12th and they won the ticket to compete at the NSJA National US Tournament. Junten’s English Teacher Mr.Repsher wrote a report about the contest.

Junten’s Team B, Mr.Sekine (Year 3) and Mr.Furukawa (Year 2), won three times out of four competitions. Junten Team A, Ms.Aoki (Year 1) and Ms.Sekine (Year 1) participated a debate contest for the first time.

The topic of the debate was, “Resolved: On balance, governments should guarantee a universal basic income for all taxpaying members of a society.” Four Junten students researched about basic income. They prepared both anti and for basic income responses and practiced over and over during the summer vacation.

Junten students had participated in the NFLJ debate from its first tournament and this participation marks the third one. Students from China and Taiwan are excellent and the Junten students had to compete with them, but they won the 12th rank! They will continue working hard to prepare for the NSJA National US Tournament scheduled to take place in 2018.
