Moringa Cookie and Fair Trade Products

One of the SGH research project teams has been working on promoting fair trade in Japan. This month, they used Valentine’s Day to sell fair trade products including moringa cookies, teddy bears, and ladybug-shaped chocolates.

The SGH project team had the unique idea to combine moringa and cookies. A superfood, Moringa is sometimes called the Miracle Tree. The team had several product meetings to plan and develop the cookie, and they decided to go to a local sweet shop , “Ringard,” to see if they were interested in collaborating. Ringard readily agreed to the project and made the beautifully green moringa cookies. Ringard used moringa powder, a fair trade product sold by Girls, be Ambitious. Junten students seemed to enjoy the taste and texture of the cookies. The moringa team received only positive feedback!

The teddy bears were created by ICAN (International Children’s Action Network) to empower local people who need financial support. Last year, when the Junten SGH students went on the Philippine Fieldwork trip, ICAN’s staff explained why they developed the teddy bears. Junten students bought bears as souvenirs to support ICAN’s cause. This time, at the Valentine’s sale, the students sold the teddy bears and explained the background story of the bears.

The ladybug-shaped chocolates are also fair trade products and are usually sold at the ACE online shop. This time, Junten students sold the chocolates on campus. The members of the social volunteer club helped to package the chocolates and to fundraise.

It was a special 4-day sales event, and all the products were sold out. It was a great opportunity for the SGH research project team to promote fair trade and fair trade products.
