Participation in the 6th annual all-Japan John Nissel Cup Speech Contest

On Saturday, November 19th Yume Sato from Junten Senior High School attended the 6th annual all-Japan John Nissel Cup speech contest at Sophia University. After a competitive selection with 187 applicants, 20 participants were chosen to present their speeches at the event to six judges and the audience.

Yume’s speech was titled “Building Our Future Together”. In it, she spoke about discrimination revolving around African-Americans, the LGBT community and the disabled. She touched on the need to put our biases aside and try to learn more about one another; how we need to create a welcoming environment so that others are unafraid to show us who they are; finally, how we should not feel sorry for those who seem unfortunate, but instead realize that we all face our own obstacles in life and that we need to help each other through them. Afterwards, one of the six judges asked her a question about her speech.

Yume was the final presenter and did a fantastic job. She was nervous waiting for her turn, but was confident when she presented and focused on the message. If you’re interested in watching the speech yourself, you can follow this link!
