Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Dr.Ogawa’s Thesis Workshop for 2nd Year SGH Students
9/12/2015
Since the 1st semester, the 2nd Year SGH students have worked on their research projects in order to create theses. At the end of the 1st semester, a poster presentation was held. During this presentation session, students gave feedback, exchanging ideas and opinions. Then during the summer vacation, students reviewed the feedback and completed their theses. The 2nd year students usually have a busy summer, as they go on school trips overseas. Despite having such limited time, the students worked really hard to complete their theses.

As this was the students’ very first experience writing theses, everyone struggled. Dr.Hirofumi Ogawa from the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies acted as the students’ thesis writing teacher and provided helpful advice and instruction. Dr.Ogawa developed a “thesis template” to help the young learners write academic papers. The template greatly helped Junten students complete their theses.
Prior to the workshop, we submitted the theses to Dr.Ogawa and he gave feedback to the class. Dr.Ogawa is an expert on thesis writing and teaches the subject at the university. In fact, Dr.Ogawa is known to be a very tough professor and it is difficult to get a good grade in his course.
“Ms. Pneumonia (Dr.Ogawa was referring to a thesis on pneumonia), you did a good job, but it is difficult to see the data table.” Dr.Ogawa commented on the fonts, citation styles, and indentations used in the students’ theses, and straightforwardly criticized when the point of a paper was unclear. He told one student, “This is rude to the people in the Philippines, you know?” After the class received general feedback, students were divided into four groups and students received more specific advice from Dr.Ogawa.
