On Saturday September 12th, Junten SGH students participated in a workshop with DEAR called Enjo suru mae ni – “Before you Offer Assistance”. The goal of the workshop was to get students to “look before they leap” and think critically about whether any assistance they would offer would actually benefit its recipients. Ms. Nishi from DEAR related her own experiences as a university student volunteer, raising money in Japan and then traveling to Brazil to teach local people how to build small fishing rafts only to find that local people were more concerned about their beautiful seaside village’s own burgeoning tourist industry and had little interest in or incentive to spend their time building small fishing rafts. At the same time, students realized that too much concern about the consequences of assistance might prevent people who could use assistance from getting it. The workshop gave these future global leaders a lot to think about.
