順天中学校・高等学校

ハーバードプライズブックは、高等部2年の優秀な生徒で国際問題に強い関心をもって積極的に活動し、海外大学進学も視野に入れて勉学を進めているものに、ハーバード大学同窓会が授与する賞（本2冊）です。本年度のプライズブックは英語選抜類型の杉江寿子さんに、3月22日に行われた2024年度3学期の終業式において授与しました。

杉江さんは高校一年次に、文部科学省による「トビタテ！留学JAPAN」を利用してマレーシアの児童養護施設にて1ヶ月間のインターンを行いました。その後も国際協力に関連した様々な課外活動に参加しました。学校内では、ソーシャルコネクション委員会の委員長として計二回の企画を開催し、生徒たちが国際問題への理解を深める機会を提供しました。さらに、フィリピンの学校への物資を届ける活動を行ったことに加えて、学校内の探究活動では、日本の小学校で異文化や英語を身近に感じてもらうための企画を定期的に実施しました。これらの経験をいかし、文化人類学と国際協力を海外の大学で学びたいと考えているそうです。

授与式にはハーバード大学卒業生でハーバードビジネススクールで次世代リーダー育成プログラムの開発を担当している高橋愛さんにプレゼンターとしてご来校いただく予定でしたが、トランプ政権が外国人の再入国を規制する可能性があり、アメリカからの帰国を見合わせなくてはなりませんでした。代わりに、本校の国際・進路担当のJude Ryan教諭（写真左）がPrize Bookを授与しました。

Hello everyone, I’m Ai Takahashi from the Harvard Club of Japan.

The Harvard Club of Japan is proud to award the Harvard Prize Book to a junior at each school who exemplifies excellence in scholarship and demonstrates high achievement in non-academic areas. This program engages Harvard Clubs globally, recognizing exceptional students in over 1,000 schools.

I’m delighted to present this year’s Harvard Prize Book for Junten High School to Ms. Kotoko Sugie.

Ms. Sugie, your dedication to addressing social issues through active involvement in diverse initiatives—including an internship in Malaysia and research on branding strategies for Cambodian entrepreneurs—has clearly set you apart. In addition, your proactive mentorship of classmates and juniors aiming for the Tobitate! Study Abroad JAPAN program demonstrates impressive achievement beyond academics. You have consistently shown exceptional scholarship paired with a genuine commitment to inspiring others. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!

Today, I’d also like to share two messages with all of you.

First, our world currently faces significant challenges, such as climate change, geo-political conflicts, and growing societal divisions. These issues are indeed complex, but your generation also possesses unprecedented potential. With global connectivity, advanced technology, and greater access to knowledge, you now have the power to influence society and drive change on a scale that was previously unimaginable. Your ideas and actions can shape the future.

Second, each of you has unique strengths, passions, and ways of seeing the world. Sometimes we worry about fitting in or following the same path as others, but what truly matters is discovering and embracing what excites you and what makes you uniquely you. When I was in high school, like you, I loved building robots but was also drawn to thinking about how social systems operate. So, I struggled to choose between pursuing studies in the sciences or the social sciences. By exploring different interests, trying various experiences, and reflecting deeply on what mattered most to me, I understood my strengths and discovered a path uniquely suited to me—designing policies, organizational frameworks, and programs that apply technology to address societal challenges.

I encourage each of you to explore whatever sparks your interest, engage in new experiences, and identify what truly resonates with you—especially what you genuinely enjoy. Through this process you will find a fulfilling path where your talents and passions intersect, enabling you to maximize your own potential and to have the greatest impact.

Congratulations again to Ms. Sugie, and I look forward to seeing how each of you discovers your own unique path to realizing your potential. Thank you!
