順天中学校・高等学校

ハーバードプライズブックは高等部2年生の優秀生徒でリーダーシップがあり、国際的な関心が高く、海外大学進学も視野に入れている生徒1名に、ハーバードクラブジャパンから本が贈られるという行事です。世界中約2000校が参加しています。順天高等学校は2015年に日本で6番目の参加校となり、今年で5回目の授与になります。

今年の受賞者は2年3組の取口七晴（とりぐちなのは）さんです。3月20日、終業式においてRachel Lengさんが、ハーバードクラブからのお祝いの手紙と2冊の本を授与しました。

Congratulations for being awarded the Harvard Prize Book!
These books have been awarded to you upon your school’s recommendation that you are an outstanding student in the next-to-graduating high school class who have displayed excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.
This award is a reflection of the outstanding qualities you have displayed to date and will, no doubt, bring forth in the future. We urge you to take strong interest in everything, study and experience many things, and take up new challenges to open your horizon. Be passionate in all of your endeavors. It would be a great joy to Harvard, if the books we present to you today were of use to you.
Harvard as a liberal arts college offers diverse opportunities, teachers and friends from around the world – in short a stimulating environment where you can experience many things and learn at the highest levels. We hope you will place Harvard in your short list of colleges you wish to apply to.

Congratulations again, Ms. Nanoha TORIGUCHI. You should be very proud of yourself, not only for the Harvard Prize Book, but truly for all of your amazing achievements so far. I am sure you will continue to be very successful if you keep following your present direction.
取口さん、改めておめでとう。ハーバードプライズブックだけでなく、今までのあなたの素晴らしい成果すべてを誇りに思ってください。今の道を続けて進めばさらに素晴らしい成果が得られるでしょう。

To the rest of the students here today, I want to encourage all of you to follow Ms. Toriguchi’s example, but also to embark on your own journey and create your own story. Everyone has different experiences, and what works for one person may not have the same results for another.
ここにいるすべての生徒の皆さん。取口さんの例に倣って進んでほしいと思いますが、それだけでなく、ぜひ、自分自身の物語を作る旅に出発してほしいと願っています。みんなが違う経験を持っているのですから、ある人を成功に導いた行動がほかの人に当てはまるとは限らないのです。

To find your own path, you will need to follow your heart. You will have to step out of your comfort zone, even when you are not confident, to try new things and explore different ways of seeing the world.
Do not be afraid to take more challenges, as the journey and exposure will surely open your mind and provide you new adventures and opportunities. Never stop being curious and learning about anything and everything around you.
自分の道を見つけるためには、あなた自身の心に従う必要があります。心地よい日常から抜け出して、たとえ自信がなくても、新しいことを試し、世界を別の見方でみる方法を開発しなくてはなりません。
挑戦することを恐れてはなりません。旅立ちや出会いは必ずやあなたの心を開き、新しい冒険や素晴らしい機会をもたらすでしょうから。好奇心を持ち続けましょう。あなたの周りのすべてのことを学びの機会としましょう。

Living in Tokyo, a truly cosmopolitan city, you are very lucky to have access to so many resources that other people around the world do not. For example, people from all walks of life and all over the world gather here. Go out and meet more of them.
In fact, meet as many people as you can – you never know how the next person you meet could change your life – they could become a close friend, a mentor, a role model, someone you could learn from, or someone you could teach…
東京は国際都市です。世界のどこともつながっているあなた方の環境はめったに得られないものです。あらゆる種類の人生を歩く人が世界中から東京に集まっています。外に出なさい。そして、もっと多くの人にお会いなさい。とにかく会えるだけたくさんの人に出会いましょう。次に会う人があなたの人生を変えるかもしれませんよ。親友になるかもしれないし、恩師かも、お手本とすべき人かも、学ぶべきことがある人かも、ひょっとしたらあなたの生徒になる人かもしれません。

You will encounter many different things, many of which you will not like or realize is just not for you. That is perfectly fine! It is as important to find out what you do not like, as it is to find out what you do like. Failure is not something to be afraid of – learning from mistakes is the best way to learn about yourself and improve, rather than never taking any risk.
皆さんはこれからいろいろなことに遭遇すると思います。いやなことや気にも留めないことの多くは、そもそもあなた向きの事柄ではないのでしょう。それで構わないのです。好きでないことを発見するのは、好きなことを発見することと同じだけ重要なのです。失敗というのは、恐れたりするようなものではありません。危険を何も冒さないということではなく、誤りから学ぶということこそが、学習し成長するに最も適した方法なのですから。

To conclude, I would like to encourage all of you to challenge yourself to do something new every day. For example, speak to someone new every day, learn something new every day, or even something simple like watch a new show about a different country. Remember, the only difference between an obstacle and an opportunity is our attitude towards it. Every opportunity has an obstacle, and every obstacle has an opportunity. It is up to you to create your own opportunities, your own luck, and your own version of a success story.
最後に、あなたたちすべてに、毎日ひとつ何か新しいことに挑戦することをお勧めします。例えば、毎日一人まだ話したことのない人と話してみるとか、毎日ひとつ何か新しいことを学ぶとか、もっと簡単に毎日違った国に関係があるテレビ番組やビデオを見るとか。大切なこと、それは、障害と機会の違いは、あなたのそれに向かう姿勢だけであるということです。どんな機会にも障害があり、どんな障害も機会となりうるのです。それを決めるのはあなた。機会を作り出し、幸運を呼び寄せ、あなた自身のサクセスストーリーを語るのはあなたです。

授賞式終了後、ハーバードプライズブックに応募したものの惜しくも受賞を逃した同級生の成田渚さんも加えて懇談会をしました。二人の在学中の活動と、将来について1時間にわたって懇談しました。Leng氏は、二人にぜひハーバード大学も進路の候補として考えてほしいと励ましてくださいました。二人をはじめとした順天高校生が一層世界に羽ばたいていってほしいものです。
